Grendel and the Importance of Human Values :: Grendel Essays

Grendel and the Importance of Human Values In Grendel, by tin Gardner, there is considerable disquietude, but there are also moments of pleasure as well. The cause of these contrasting feelings is most often Grendel himself. As he changes from a purposeful and almost kind creature to a very cruel monster that scorns hope, we find ourselves feeling both pleased and upset at contrasting times. In this element, though, lies a much greater purpose than simply good literature - it helps the reader understand the importance of human values. Pleasure in the countersign comes mainly in realizing how much Grendel acts like a human, and how much more rational he is than one would expect for a cruel monster. After perceive the deer in the beginning of the novel, Grendel points out why he consumes cows instead of deer they have more meat and are easier to catch. Although its not inevitably a pleasant thought, its somewhat comforting to know that Grendel appears to kill for the pr actical benefits (food) and not simply for the sake of killing. This is no worse than we might do. He seems in particular human-like when he listens to the Shapers song. Crying, he says that he was filled with sorrow and tenderness (44) and that he was torn apart by poetry (44). Another moment of pleasure comes as he is talking to the dragon and expresses a sort of hope and purpose. In defending his resolve not to scare humans so much retributive for fun, Grendel says, Why shouldnt one change ones ways, improve ones character? (72). In wholly the dragons insistence that everything is worth nothing, Grendel refuses to believe him. He even says, Nevertheless, something will come of all this (74). His hope makes the readers think all the better of him. Even if, at first, Grendel seems almost kind, and the reader is pleased with his character, he soon becomes more and more evil, and his actions bring well-nigh a feeling of uneasiness, to say the least. Before, the killing of people f or no apparent reason disgusted Grendel. However, when he brings Unferth home, he kills the two guards so I wouldnt be misunderstood (90). Later, in probably the most disturbing scene of the book, we see how meaningless killing has become to Grendel. He brutally attacks the queen and is determined to kill her.

The Thematic Significance Of The Floral Images In Wide Sargasso Sea. :: essays research papers

Wide Sargasso Sea is the story of Antoinette Cosway, a Creole heiress who grew up in the West Indies on a decaying plantation. When she comes of age she is conjoin off to an Englishman, and he takes her away from the only place she has known--a house with a tend where "the paths were overgrown and a smell of dead flowers mixed with the fresh backing smell. Underneath the tree ferns, tall as forest tree ferns, the light was green. Orchids flourished out of reach or for some reason not to be touched."(p.16).floral Images are central to the theme in the novel Wide Sargasso Sea. They are present throughout the entire novel and besides have an issuing on the atmosphere. There are several examples. The first and most prominent floral image in the novel is of the garden at Coulibri, "But it had at rest(p) wild. The paths were overgrown and a smell of dead flowers mixed with the fresh living smell." (p.16). Antoinette describes the garden as bei ng full of life but now everything is dead, this symbolizes something that is well-favored but gone back or is not going to last long. The garden is also compared to the garden of Eden, "Our garden was large and beautiful as that garden in the Bible-the tree of life grew there"(p.16). When she refers to the "tree of life growing there" it is as though she is looking back and relating to the former slave owners. She also says "The scent was very sweet and strong. I never went near it."(p.16). This excerpt is symbolizing her constant fear to ever be close to giving love.      other floral image is that of pink roses, "There where two pink rosestouched it the petals dropped."(p.72), "have all beautiful things sad destinies."(p.72). These quotes are referring that Antoinette is beautiful like her amaze but look at their destinies.     Another image is that of a falling flower, "One morning a small flow er felllooked like snow.

Information System

1. 4. 4 discipline Systems for the Banking & Financial vault of heaven Audit is one of the major controls for monitoring care activities in the banks and monetary institutions. In a computerized environment, IS audit is a very effective and necessary activity. Usually the IT implementation in the banking and financial organizations is done by adopting a mix of different methodologies internal development and deployment and third party product development and deployment. In case of internally authentic and deployed IT systems, IS audit leave behind require to be done by a team of specially trained internal or external auditors. However, it is preferable to substantiate the IS audit conducted with the uphold of suitable external agencies with the required skills and expertise to ensure independent nature of audit. In case of development and deployment of the IT systems by third parties, the IS audit requires to be conducted by trusted auditor/s with skills and expertise, requir ed for the purpose. IS audit assumes greater signifi sewerce because a large number of critical and strategic financial operations in the banking and financial sector are wholly or partly being handled by the computerized systems. There is a significant need for determining the role of IS in banks. This would agree the top manage- ment that the IS development is in the right direction. This would also help in exploring the intended and the real role of IS in banks. The knowledge of the real role of IS in banks would help IS managers in managing information systems by judging the business needs of the IS projects, associated risks, importance and ranking of IS managers in organizational hierarchy, need for innovation and flexibility in IS planning approach, etc.The IS practitioners may use the variables used here for self-evaluation and for deciding about the IS development. It has been well recognized that IS plays different roles in different industries. However, there is limited look for examining the differences in the role of IS within a single industry. This study empirically explores the differences in the role of IS among public, private, and external ban. ks. Results indicate that while, at present, only private and foreign banks have obtained strategic advantages using IT, public sector banks, although late, have also realized the importance of IT.It has been empirically proved that the future impact of IS does not commute significantly with the banking companys. This suggests that IS efforts put in by the public sector banks are in the right direction and can be expected to engender them a strategic advantage in future. Foreign and private banks, though in the strategic group today, have to constantly harness IS for strategic advantage to avow their position. Sustaining competitive advantage is very difficult, because IS managers have to continuously evaluate the banks applications portfolio with respect to technology and their competitors.Publ ic sector banks have to search for ways to shift from support group to the strategic group in order to enjoy a strategic advantage from the use of IS. In order to achieve this objective, they may have to fake a different IS schema so as to make them competitive enough to survive. Future research could evolve suitable IS strategies for all the three sectors. This root has tried to locate the banks on the Strategic Grid. However, the level of computerization of various branches of a bank may be different and hence their dependency on IT may be different.Future research may involve locating the various branches and departments of a bank on the Strategic Grid and suggesting a suitable strategy for the branch. This study has the limitation that data are collected only from key IT executives. Perceptions of the banks business executives may be different from that of the IT executives. Therefore, future research could also begin obtaining and analysing the opinion of banks business exe cutives and looking for perceptual differences, if any.Another interesting area of future research could be to unearth the reasons for adopting a particular role of IS and to explore facilitators and inhibitors in using IS for strategic use. Uses of information technology in banking Write your abstract here. Applications of Information Technology in Banks in India While computer by itself is the intimately cherished invention that man has ever accomplished, its union with chat technology which is at its pinnacle, has brought yet another amazing extension to its already fabulous capabilities. From the diaphragm of Marconi to this day , the improvements that have taken place in the television , have literally brought the entire world into an individuals bedroom. Joining this powerful communication environment , the IT has opened flood gates for global economic activity. The contribution of economic and political changes that have so far taken place to support international trade l eave behind bear fruit only when banking and the associated services can catch up with the new trends. The modern IT has enough capabilities to enable banks, financial institutions and others to bring about the desired changes.Banking sector reforms introduced a decade ago in 1992-93 , have been based on five fundamentals 1. Strengthening of prudential norms and market discipline. 2. Appropriate adoption of International benchmarks. 3. Management of organizational change and consolidation. 4. Technological upgradation. 5. Human resource development. The Financial Reforms that were initiated in the early 90s and the globalization and liberalisation measures brought in a completely new operating environment to the Banks that were till then operating in a highly protected milieu.Services and products like anywhere Banking Tele-Banking Internet banking Web Banking , e-banking, e-commerce, e-business etc. have become the buzzwords of the day and the Banks are trying to cope with the com petition by offering innovative and attractively packaged technology-based services to their customers. Reserve Bank of India constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Dr. C. Rangarajan. The main task of the committee was preparation of a plan for computerization for the stoppage 1990-1994 ( for 5 Years ).For the purpose of computerization , the committee selected the important areas relating to customer service , internal-decision-making process , productivity and profitability. The committee furnished its report on November 9, 1989 with the sideline recommendations- 1. The branches having daily average level of vouchers at more than 750 should be computerized . 2. Computerization on branch level should be achieved on any of the following basis- (i)Selected branches will have on-line terminals with micro and mini-computers which will be linked with central main-frame computer to provide counter service and other office-services. ii)Personal computers will be installed at counters which will be linked with local area network. (iii)For third option , the banks will have to depend on Telecom line. 3. The banks should gradually use developed devices such as- Photocopier , FAX , Duplicator , Microfilm , Signature Storage , Scanners etc. 4. Non-computerized branches can take the services of other local computerized branch / office in case of important task. 5. The customers should have the facility to route their business to any branch of the bank. 6. All-Bank Credit Card should be issued. . Computers should be made bilingual and comely training arrangements should be made to provide training to staff members. 8. The regular customers should be offered On-line facility. 9. Like some European countries , there should be a system of credit clearing. 10. BANKNET should be used for interbank and intra bank applications. 11. All Regional offices and Zonal offices to be computerized in a phased manner. Rangarajan Committee 1989 A Statistical abstract Rangar ajan Committee ( 1989 ) has focused its stress on computerization of banks.A statistical analysis was also made in the report of committee. In this analysis ,it was mentioned that following jobs can be rapidly and easily performed at Regional Office/Zonal office level. 1. To ascertain the bad and doubtful debts and to make provision for them. 2. To claim the measure under Credit Guarantee Schemes of DICGC. 3. To communicate , analyze and forecast the data for trade-plan. 4. To make action plan for recovery of advances. 5. Personnel Information System. 6. Credit Information System. 7. Checking of figures of priority sector advances. . Consolidation of statements/figures to be sent to the RBI. Present level of Computerization Based on the norms worked out by Rangarajan Committee (II), 7827 branches of the Public arena banks were identified for full branch computerization up to March 2000 of which around 4620 were computerized as on March 99. Meanwhile, the networking of the already- computerized branches also assumed urgency and some of the Banks have started inter-connecting their computerized branches using leased telephone lines or Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATS).This is meant to provide a more comprehensive service to customers and at the same time give banks better centralized control over the branch operations. As of now, New Private Sector and Foreign Banks have an edge over Public Sector Banks as far as implementation of technological solutions is concerned. However, the latter are in the process of making huge investments in technology. Sourcehttp//www. shvoong. com/humanities/1748375-applications-information-technology-banks-india/ixzz2ONAVoUdI

Laboratory Equipment and Bunsen Burner

Carson Drollery Partner Adam Lineman Purpose The usage of this lab is to 1. Test your lab skills for accuracy. 2. Also to know what the safe rules of lab are. 3. Lastly to be able to name and Identify la element surgical procedure See lab skills lab IPPP-28. Stetsonsl . The hottest part of the flame Is the tip of the Inner blue cone of the flame 2. If your flame is to yellow orange or sotto black you have to adjust the air vent of the Bunsen burner. 3.In lab I learned how to test my skills for accuracy I know how to do this in that when weighing objects the closer you were to the actual weight the more accurate you were. In lab I also learned what the safety rules are some examples of the safety rules are safety goggles should be worn at all times, when mixing water and acid mix acid into water and always rhythm the burner off when it is not in use. In lab I also learned how to able and identify lab equipment some examples of lab equipment that we used in this lab were a Bunsen b urner, graduated cylinder and a flint striker. In lab I was able to successfully light the Bunsen burner using a flint striker. I was also able to create an inner blue cone within the flame of the Bunsen burner. I was also able to successfully zero the balance and record the mass of the objects to the correct number of significant figures. I was also able to successfully transfer the liquids correctly as swell as read the measurements of the graduated wielders and burette and find the displacement volume of the graduated cylinders.I was also able to filter the a salt and water commixture and a sand and water mixture to figure out which one was soluble and which one was insoluble. Lastly I was able to bend the glass pipe to a 90 degree angle read the temperature . 1 degrees C. Sources of error that could of occurred were not having the balance perfectly zeroed out, having an object that did not weigh what it was supposed to, or holding the glass tubing in the flame to long or too l ow within the flame.

Kant on Time as A Priori Essay

Immanuel Kant presented a series of phone lines regarding the nature of measure. He sought to prove that metre is innate in the sensibility of all human macrocosms and that it is independent of the hearty world and argued that cadence belongs to baffle as an a priori form of intuition (Kant, 74). In his Critique of Pure Reason, he claimed that time is a priori instead of being a permeating feature of mind-independent reality. He also argued that the nature of time as an element of the universe is sensible instead of conceptual which the mindcompels upon experience (75). He arrived at the conclusion that time could not independently exist or be associated to other objects as a verifiable entity. He claimed time to be the form of inner sense and maintained that time is It is the immediate condition of inner appearances (of our souls), and thereby the mediate condition of outer appearances. (77). The first of Kants arguments regarding time as an a priori form of sensibility stat es that it is a necessity for our understanding of simultaneity and succession to be preconceived since they be generated in our minds prior to our experience of simultaneous but successive moments in time (75). Kant claimsmagazine is not an empirical concept that has been derived from any experience. For neither coexistence nor succession would ever catch within our perception, if the agreeation of time were not presupposed as underlying them a priori. Only on the presupposition of time can we represent to ourselves a number of things as existing at one and the same time (simultaneously) or at different times (successively). (74)By stating that Only under its presuppositions can one represent that several things exist at one and the same time or in different times, (74) Kant, in essence, is implying that concepts can not made on the founding of perception unless we have a preconceived depression of such concept. For example, our notion of a dog could not be a concept which is establish on our experience since our mind would not be able to perceive it we did not have an idea of a dog which was based on a preconceived notion. However, even with Gardners explanation, Kants argument is still unpersuasive. It fails to offer us sufficient reasons to agree that a preconceived notion of time is a requirement prerequisite of the perception of time. This argument is not compelling enough to weaken how time is viewed in the common sense because it begs a faulty conclusion that if this was so, our notion of color should also be a priori. Consequently, with this argument, the logical assumption about time would be that because the notion of time is conjured simultaneously with representing the world of material objects, it cannot be based on perception of material objects. The basic view of the nature of time actually remains definite as the properties of time, which exists in and all the objects of the universe, are perceived through our experiences. Kants second argument tries to prove that time is an a priori form of intuition by arguing that it is possible to consider time without any appearances of any material object but it is not possible to consider any material object without the appearance of time. Kant arguesTime is a needed representation that underlies all intuitions. We cannot, in respect of appearances in general, remove time itself, though we can quite well think time as void of appearances. Time is, therefore, given a priori. In it alone is actuality of appearances possible at all. Appearances may, one and all, vanish but time (as the universal condition of their possibility) cannot itself be removed.. (74-75)However, if we take this argument into consideration, it would then be logically imperative to conclude that space embodies the of outer sense or time embodies the inner appearance til now this conclusion, albeit sound based on the provisions of the Kants argument, actually contradicts the text itself . All in all, Kant s arguments fail to mitigate the strong points of the common sense view of time which is, that time is a pervasive feature of the world. His arguments do not offer conclusive ideas. Although he tries to provide empirical evidences to his arguments by referencing his claims with the realities of experience, his arguments imply assumptions that when interpreted do not necessarily hold true. His theory requires a vital premise, that our notions of time and space are a priori, and it requires it to be granted in the onset however he offers no compelling argument. This vital premise caused the undoing of his entire theory.Works CitedKant, Immanuel. The Critique of Pure Reason. Trans. Kemp-Smith, Norman. Palgrave Macmillan, 1995.

On the other hand, under the Investors Lease Act of the Philippines, foreign nationals or corporation may enter into lease agreement with Filipino landowners for an initial period of fifty years and a renewable cite of 25 years. As we try to comprehend to the law, it is really pro-Filipino. We noticed that the there are only 40% foreign investors or the stockholders and the 60% come from Filipinos. Its also obvious that the aliens are prohibited to completely possess lands which are really in accordance to Article XII, Section 7 of the Philippine Constitution. lecture about the 40% foreign capitalists and investors, the Philippinegovernment can gain taxes from them which in turn can be used to accommodate common dear(p) for the Filipinos. The issue on Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or prominently called pork barrel barges in. It does not mean that though they have been advancing to the country, they steal whats ours. thither are laws for them to follow, thus, theres no way for us to worry. The law has been already promulgated. All we can do is to deal with i t, just no racial deviation, just focus for the common good of all Filipinos. The aliens are striving for their benefits, the same way should we act for ourselves. Lets do our part and deposit to our virtues as we keep burning the Filipino spirit

The Disadvantages of Technology in Education

Technology can be rightly said to create impacted every occupation. Technology application and the changes it brings be in occurrence intended and necessitated, as it is a part of the larger turnment of the society. Technology has been introduced in all fields and occupations, either directly or indirectly, and its benefits are evident in terms of time, quality, process etc. As technology has been broadly introduced in all walks of life, no occupation can assume to be independent of either direct or indirect affair of technology, since it is integrated to the society. It is therefore obvious that the fields of education and learning have similarly incorporated technology, resulting in unprecedented possibilities and results. The advantages of technology cannot be disputed, particularly given the recent trends in e-learning, however despite this its disadvantages shouldnt be ignored. The essential and sustentation of the associated infrastructure for technology introduction may itself look challenging for many. New technologies may require special wiring and any breakd accepts would be disruptive and need repair by experts. Also when high costs on software program, hardware and connection costs are borne, the equipment might soon be outdated (NCRTEC, 2005). The teacher has right away become more of a learning facilitator rather than an instructor or information provider. The teachers methodology has changed from traditional, teacher-centered teaching to learner-centered, interactive teaching. The teacher has move away from creation a fact teller and an expert to being a collaborator and occasionally an expert, with learning emphasis being on relationships and examination rather than facts and reproduction.Students are moving away from passive learning, given the lesser lecturing towards cooperative learning. Focusing more on information literacy, the teacher helps in guiding students to identify and access required information. With students being o pened of resourcing all relevant information, the teacher now needs to help them to analyze, evaluate and judge the suitableness of the information they have required. With the involvement of technology, the traditional skills and exercises of students are being increasingly abandoned. The use of calculator by students avoids them the benefits of manual calculations. Manual calculations involve deeper analysis of the bothers which develop brain activity and mental capability. Introduction of technologies, while helping students, are in fact doing away with the crucial mental exercises and reasoning enterprises of the students, depriving them of the associated valuable benefits. With most schools accepting electronic submission of answers or essays, students no longer need to be concerned of spelling and grammar usage. These are automatically highlighted or corrected, saving them the effort to do it by themselves. In the long run, they do not develop the skills necessary for identif ying and correcting these. The use of internet in education not only exposes students to treat or misleading information, but also to engage in plagiarism. Assignments and tests are quickly completed by reproducing available information rather than producing it by themselves. The use of technology in education is definitely doing away with the skill sets that have been acquired by individuals with much effort and pain, traditionally.Music education is also an area where technological changes have done away with traditional requirements. Today, the sounds of drum, piano or other instruments can be electronically created without learning the fundamentals of that instrument. Thus experts only need to hold in these sounds effectively, which would otherwise have required the performance of so many musicians. Although there are several advantages of a data processor, the use of figurers in language learning has its own restrictions. One of its main disadvantages is that it would lead t o an increase in education costs (Gips, DiMattia & Gips).Low budget schools and poor students would not be able to buy a computer, when computer become a basic necessity for students. This would cause unjust conditions on the part of poor schools and students, with regard to education. Even when computers are bought, the need for expensive software or hardware would again be another financial strain on the part of the schools and students. For computer assisted second language learning, it becomes necessary that two the teacher and student be proficient in the basics of computer use.Students cannot use computers in language learning when they lack training in computer technology. Most teachers unfortunately do not have the technological training to guide their students through computer assisted language learning programs (Lai & Kritsonis). Another problem with regard to computers in language learning is that the software for language learning if far from perfect. Many language lear ning programs are recent and its functions are exceedingly limited. The computers need to be capable of not just evaluating the correctness of a spoken word, but also the appropriateness of the said word.It should also be capable of evaluating students response with respect to pronunciation, syntax and context of usage. Second language learners face several situations in the course of their language learning and computers cannot cargo hold such unexpected situations. As the artificial intelligence of the computers is limited, it cannot handle unexpected learning problems and queries of learners. It should be noted that there is a fundamental difference in the way humans and computers analyze information. Computers with such a level of intelligence cannot be expected for at least quite sometime (Blin, 1994).With the emergence of newer technologies, the fact that it is indeed beneficial cannot be disputed. However, these new technologies are doing away with the requirement for devel opment of personal skill sets that have been traditionally followed. Our education is moving away from a totally technology independent field to highly technology dependent. Education is our basics to understanding of the world, survival and success tactics. With much of this education being technology backed, we step into the harsh world, largely backed with technology use. The change here is irreversible like that in other technology aided fields.

Differentiating Organisms Using a Gram Stain

Amanda Lab Report 1 Microbiology Laboratory Title Differentiating Organisms utilise the Gram Stain Introduction The experiment conducted was based upon the known attributes of two different groups of bacterium, those that are g-force positive, and those that are gee negative. Using a precise steeling procedure, it is possible to differentiate the two types under a microscope The gram stain method of differentiation is possible because of differences in the cell membrane among the two categories of bacteria. Gram positive cells have an extra thick layer that is made of highly-crosslinked peptidoglycans, which impart different properties. This layer makes the cells less susceptible to decolorization by ethyl Alcohol. Using this property, cells with a thinner peptidoglycan layer can be stained a different color than gram positive cells within a culture. The uncomplicated color is applied to the culture and imparts a purplish color to all bacteria in your sample. Adding Grams i odine, a mordant used by the methods namesake, makes the violet color more intense, and creates a bond with the primary stain that makes it less soluble. The third step is to add a decolorizing agent, ethyl group Alcohol. In gram negative cells the alcohol makes the let outer cells porous, which allows the primary stain to be softened away. The gram positive cells have pores that are actually dried out by the alcohol, which makes the primary stain fix into the membrane, and not get washed away. The final stain is the counter stain that lends a different, wiretapish color to the gram negative cells that have been washed of the primary stain. Methods The method used in this experiment was derived from Cappucino and Sherman (2011) as detailed in experiment 10 with substitutions for the unknown bacteria.Aseptic research lab technique was followed. One slide of the 7 unknown bacteria and one slide which included both unknown 7 and unknown 2 were fain using the following stain techni que. The initial smears were made from broth cultures using a loop, air dried, and then heat improve. The smears were covered with crystal violet stain and allowed to absorb for one minute, before gently rinsing with a controlled stream of water from a squeeze bottle. Next, Grams iodine was applied to the smears with a dropper and left to sit for one minute before rinsing with water.Next, the 95% Ethyl Alcohol mixture was dropped slowly onto each smear and allowed to knead off until the alcohol appeared candid and then gently rinsed with water. Lastly in the staining procedure, Saffranin was dropped onto the smear until it was covered, for 45 seconds. The smears were rinsed with water final time, then placed among sheets of bibulous paper to dry. Each smear was viewed under the light microscope using oil immersion at 1000x magnification. These smears were compared to smears prepared in the same fashion, of the known bacteria E. coli, B. genus Cereus, S. ureus, and a mixed smear containing both E. coli and S. aureus. Results Experiment 10 Observations Bacteria E. coli B. genus Cereus S. aureus Mixture of E. coli and S. aureus RepresentativeField Shape barn Bacillus Cocci Cocci, Bacilli Arrangement Single, both(prenominal) clustered by the stain Strepto Variable, mostly staph cluster Cell Color pink olympian empurple Purple/pink Gram chemical reaction - + + +/- Unknown Bacteria Observations Name Unknown 7 Unknown 2 Mixed Field Representative Field Shape Bacillus cocci Bacillus/Cocci overlapArrangement Strepto staph cluster Cell Color Purple purple Purple Gram Reaction + + + * elude 1 shows how the deuce-ace different cells were observed after staining. The only pink and gram negative bacteria were the E. coli which were rod shaped and collected in a strepto arrangement. Bacillus cereus was purple in color, appeared rod shaped characteristic of bacilli and was gram positive, appearing purple as expected. The other gram positive and purple bacteria , Staphylococcus aureus were globular in shape, and clustered into large groups with some lone cocci visualized. The mixture in Table 1 showed a good contrast between the pink rods of E. coli and the purple circles of S. aureus. * Table 2 shows Unknown 7 as a rod shaped, chain forming, purple bacteria. Unknown 7 was visualized as a clustering purple, spherical organism. Both appeared gram +. The mixture of the two showed the same shapes, but in this case the rods and spheres tended to cluster and were more difficult to observe as they were the same color. But rods and spheres could be clearly discerned upon careful examination. Table 1 served as a control for table 2, as each the unknowns in Table 2 were going to be one of the Table 1 organisms, barring contamination. If a bacteria was visualized in Table 2s entropy that was not present in Table 1, there was an obvious error which could be corrected by redoing the slides. The information for Table 2 came from observations on atom ic number 90 following the original day for the unknowns on Tuesday, as we observed contamination on the slides from gram negative bacteria that should not have been present with gram positive stains.Discussion B. cereus and S. aureus appeared purple upon observation through the microscope. This is consistent with knowledge about the two bacteria that indicate they are gram positive bacteria. The purple coloration means that their outer layers are of the more highly cross linked type with more peptidoglycan, which gives their cell membrane shape and firmer structure. This also makes the membranes present to dehydration without weakening. When the decolorizing agent was applied in this experiment, the cell walls of the gram positive organisms shrank up, not allowing the primary stain to leave. They remained purple even after treatment with Saffranin. E. colis outer layer also has peptidoglycan but it is much thinner, and surrounded by lipids. When the decolorizing agent was applied t o the slide containing this bacteria, its membrane let the stain wash easily out of the thin membrane. The saffranin as the second stain was then picked up easily, giving the E. oli a pink shade. The cores of the study show that unknown 7substance was B. cereus. The purple color and gram positive reaction ruled out E. coli as the identity of the unknown. Rods arranged in strips were observed in the unknown 7, so B. cereus became the leading contender. When unknown 2 and unknown 7 were mixed, a contrast between the rods and spheres could be observed, which made it clear that unknown 7 showed a clear bacilli structure. Contamination on Tuesday of the experiment led to misleading results.Because unknown 2 had been visualized as purple cocci, and unknown 7 had been visualized as purple bacilli, when unknown 2 and unknown 7 were mixed, it was unclear as to what the pink gram negative bacteria appearing in the slide were. The pink bacteria clung to the purple bacteria in the slide. I t was decided that the unknown 2 had been mixed up with another unknown during testing, or the aseptic technique had been compromised. The unknowns were heat fixed and stained a second time, visualized individually and in a mix . The final results were unambiguous. It is unclear whether the gram-negative bacteria were E. coli or another gram negative bacterium as the pink structures were behind the purple structures in the slide and were very translucent. It also possible the pink bacteria were a result of decolorizing the bacteria for too long with ethyl alcohol during the staining process, or the pink bodies were contaminant material and not cells at all which happened to take on the Saffranin stain by chance. Hi-Value Supermarkets: Every Day Low Pricing Case Study Essay

Problem directionHi-Value Super mart places located in the Centralia, Missouri ara ar faced with the chore of deciding whether or non to change their sales strategy to e genuinelyday low pricing. This has become an important subject for Hi-Value due to their bolshie in sales of the last few quarters, and a possible future loss in market share in their area. Hi-Value has three line of descents in the Centralia area and in all are perceived as having a senior high school market value in comparison to its competitors. They has attempted to determine the strengths and weaknesses in accordance to its competitors by conducting a survey and two direction groups which provided some very key results. Going further into this problem we must similarly assess whether all products at bottom the workshops should entail everyday low pricing, and if not all which ones. We must also determine how much lower the standard price will be behave for all products in order to be considered eve ryday low pricing. The survey and focus groups also set that the bod of products the consumers are looking for are not present as intimately, and that must also be assessed.Situational analysisHi-Value Supermarkets have multiple key strengths with their certain position in the Centralia market, and they must be considered when find their next moves to attack this current problem. Having three locations within the Centralia area is a huge benefit with top multiple geographic sectors. Especially when there is no other competing supermarket chain with that many introduces in the area. The item that they have had a strong market share from 1995 to 2002 with an estimated 23% share of the market in 2002 is also very important. Hi-Value is in the position where all they need to do is at the very least take in their current positions and any increase in market share is just a bonus. Being the oldest supermarket in the Centralia area is a key strength because it makes them a well kn own and identifiable name. Their high prize products sets a standard that some of their competitors do not have building an important reputation within the community. Survey and focus groups made it very prevalent that virtually consumers think that their stores are very well put together, sanitary, andup to date. Descriptions of other competing stores did not entail the same qualities which helps in consumer preference especially because they are purchasing consumable products.Although Hi-Value has many key strengths, there are still some attributes that hinder their chances of triumph in multiple sectors. Obviously their current pricing strategy is the largest problem for the store. Although their products are of high tone of voice and most consumers seem aware of this, the high prices in many categories whitethorn not seem worth(predicate) the trade off. From the survey of 400 Centralia residents 30% said Hi-Value prices were above average. The size of their supermarkets als o poses as a weakness because they are smaller in comparison to many competitors which leads to less pose for products. This means that it is more likely that a product has a higher chance of not being stocked and the consumer does not have as much variety to choose from. severally store has been renovated throughout the years, but they are still located in older buildings which does hinder their public image. With their current position, the company has multiple opportunities to focus on that could lead to future success. As the present time, there is not one food store in Centralia who advertises on television. By starting an advertising campaign after the decision on changes to be done to the store, Hi-Value has the ability to publicly announce their updated policies via television making the entire centralia sector aware. The ability to explode each store is also an option that may be worth investing in. Lack in variety was a very prevalent weakness that consumers pointed ou t and this could solve that problem. Centralia is also a very high traffic trade area in central Missouri leaving Hi-Value with a high opportunity to gain a larger consumer base if they make the overcompensate decisions to increase market desirability. on that point are three major competing stores within the Centralia area that must all be assessed and compared to when determining the right moves for Hi-Value to make. Harrisons, elevated America, and Missouri securities industry are all very different Supermarkets with a variety of strengths and weaknesses. As explained in its description, Harrisons has a very positive image in theeyes of its customers. Their store is 50,000 cheering feet which is over twice the size of Hi-Values average size. This gives them room to hold a very widely range of general merchandise. Their current strategy is also everyday low prices and survey results prove that consumers deal they have the lowest everyday prices which gives a current war-rid den edge. Grand America is a 39,800 real feet supermarket and has the newest building making it the most modern store in Centralia. The store is considered by Hall officials as a secondary competitor being highly regimented and lack innovative merchandising appeal. Their greatest product strength is the dairy department which is highly regarded by its customers. One thing to consider with this supermarket is that their competitive pricing strategy entails listing prices of their competitors for individual items. Missouri Mart is the food volume sales attractor in Centralia. They are the main competitor of Superior supermarkets. Around 32% of Hi-Value customers shop Missouri Mart regularly and must be taken in the highest consideration when analysing competitors within the market. It is also important to raze the key findings gathered from the two focus groups. Price was determined by both groups as the most important factor in store choice explaining a lot in the loss of market sh are that Hi-Value is facing. 20 of 24 participants also agreed that the quality of meat was the second factor in store choice. Hi-Value is ranked as a medium between its competitors. Produce quality, variety, and display is ranked tierce in importance and Hi-Value was ranked in the lower tier of those categories. Hi-Values best attribute in accordance to the focus group is their shopper convenience.Recommendation and ImplementationMy recommendation for Hi-Value is to remodel and expand all of their stores and implement an commonplace low pricing strategy. This strategy will be very costly upfront, but Hi-Value has been an existing store for a long time and in order to continue their existence they must evolve with current trends in the market. The two main problems that keep coming up are their lack in variety and high pricing. This recommendation would cover both problems and give them the ability to begin gaining market share from their competitors erst again. This is definitel y a strategy built for the long term and thebenefits may not be as noticeable at the very beginning, but it should be the most beneficial option for the future of the company. triune steps will be made in order for this strategy to become a reality. Each store must go through a construction process to expand and gain space which will take time and a possible loss in sales for the time being. This public construction will definitely be noticed by the consumers, and may help gain awareness of the companies changes. Updates in all store accessories should be implemented if necessary. This will increase efficiency for all aspects of the store and with a predicted increase in customer traffic it will be a necessary expense. free-and-easy low pricing should be set at a competitive level near Grand American and Missouri Mart prices but not to the point at which perceived quality is compromised. delinquent to each of its competitors having different strengths, it would be best to provide this pricing strategy for all products in the Supermarket. As stated in the text everyday low pricing also has the scuttle of lowering operating(a) costs with reduced inventory and handling costs due to more steady and predictable demand. It may also reduce labor costs related to less frequent temporary price reductions. It is also an option to conduct a local television commercial promoting Hi-Values positive new changes, but the possibility of this happening is determinant of how much expansion will end up costing.

Critical Analysis of Efficiency Market Hypothesis Essay

In this essay, firstly, the Efficient merchandise Hypothesis (EMH) is prone an appraisal in relation to random walk, as well as its definition, revealing theories in place setting of empirical evidence. A brief explanation of the 3 forms of EMH is highlighted alongside a brief description of its interrogations for validity. The chief(prenominal) focus of discussion is whether or not Technical & Fundamental Analysis can determine unnatural pay backs by investors strategically using a set of study to formulate buying and selling decisions to produce the efficient marketplace. (Graphs and sets of equations may be applied). Following general empirical studies, the theory of Efficient Market typically asserts that, it would be impossible to consistently outperform the market by actor of technical & fundamental analysis, consequently, in the light of this assertion, technical, fundamental and other anomalies argon revealed that may suggest some levels of market inefficiencies.Fin ally, a conclusion, subjectively underlining the relevant points expressed supra, putting to perspective facts conveyed through the topic of critical discussion.Appraisal of the Efficient Market Hypothesis and Random Walk The efficient market hypothesis is a financial theory widely accepted by most academic financial economists. It was generally believed that securities markets were extremely efficient in reflecting selective information about individual stocks andabout the stock market as a whole. The accepted view was that when information arises, the news spreads very quickly and is incorporated into the prices of securities without delay. Thus, when the term efficient market was introduced into the economics literature in the 1960s , it was defined as a market in which prices at any time richly reflect and adjusts rapidly to new available information (Eugene F. Fama, 1970, p 383.). In the context of this hypothesis, efficient empirically, means that the market is capable of qu ickly digesting new information on the economy, an industry, or the value of an enterprise and accurately impounding it into securities prices. In such markets, participants can expect to earn no more, nor less, than a fair return for the risks undertaken, hence failing to provide abnormal returns. Random Walk, is a Theory closely associated with the efficient market hypothesis, was originally created by Louis Bachelier (1900), and developed by Kendall, in 1950s.Kendall (1953) found that stock and commodity prices follow a random walk. Random walk varies with regard to the time parameter. According to capital markets theory, the expected return from a gage is primarily a function of its risk. The price of the security reflects the present value of its expected in store(predicate) cash flows, which incorporates many factors such as volatility, liquidity, and risk of bankruptcy. However, while prices are rationally based, changes in prices are expected to be random and unpredictable , because new information, by its very nature, is unpredictable. Therefore stock prices are verbalise to follow a Random Walk.Versions of the Efficiency Market Hypothesis and examens Following the concept of information, as say in the above paragraph, it is useful to distinguish among three versions of the EMH, Fama (1970) identified as the weak, semi-strong, and strong forms of the hypothesis. These versions differ by their notions of what is meant by the term all available information. The tests for each form, summarized in brief, empirically shows evidence in kick upstairs of EMH According to Fama (1970), Weak form efficiency claims that all past prices of a stock are reflected in todays stock price. Therefore, technical analysis cannot be used to predict and beat a market. The Weak Form Tests. The test of the weak form of the EMH is generally taken to comprise of an autocorrelation test, a runs test andfilter rule test. An autocorrelation test investigates whether security re turns are related through time. On the other, a runs test, for example, measures the likelihood that a series of two variables is a random occurrence. A filter rule (or trading test) is a trading rule regarding the actions to be taken when shares rise or fall in value by x%. Filter rules should not work if markets are weak form efficient.Overall, the tests highlighted, statistically tests for independence, to establish the weak-form holds, thereby invalidating strategic rules for technical analysis, to obtain abnormal profits. Following the weak-form EMH, is the Semi-Strong form efficiency in which Fama (1970) states that security prices reflect all publicly available information. The Semi-Strong Test. Tests for the semi-strong, significantly and reveals Event Study. The first event study was undertaken by Fama, Fisher, Jensen and Roll (1969), though the first to be published was by Ball and Brown (1968). An event test analyzes the security both before and after an event, such as ear nings announcements, stock splits and analysts recommendations. The idea behind the event test is that an investor will not be able to reap an above average return by trading, on an event including the Fundamental Analysis strategy.

Studies show teen pregnancy has gone up in the last few years and that more than 300,000 teens receive abortions, that is equal to 1/3 of the abortions performed yearly. This article states abortion should stay legal because it keeps unwanted children from coming into this world and teens from ruining their futures.

Discussing Music Therapy Reducing Stress Health And Social Care Essay

The treatment brings the right study to cloture. give-and-take subdivision makes sense of research consequences. This is the most of import subdivision of any research study working(a)s(a) big(p) females tenseness has emerged as important mental wellness job in working region in now.The chief purpose of the visual modality was to measure the effectivity of music therapy in decrease of stress among working great(p) females at P.S.G institute of wellness scientific disciplines, coimbatore in the month of July. Each someone s base line informations was collected and they were assessed for selected parametric quantities under the subheading of physical speech pattern, psychological emphasis, fiscal emphasis, sociological emphasis, religious emphasis. After the initial appraisal, music therapy was given a period of 3 hebdomads. past reappraisal was done.5.1 General Profile of on the job(p) Womans Age of working self-aggrandizing females varied between 20 to 60 old come on s. There were 44 magnanimous females, among whom bulk ( 16 ) of the adult females were in age theme of 25 to 30 old ages. Six ( 6 ) were in the age group of 20 to 25 old ages. Thirteen ( 13 ) were in the age group o 30 to 35 old ages, six ( 6 ) were in the age group of 40 to 45 old ages and save one in the age group of 50 to 60years.The above determination was supported by a survey conducted to measure the relationship between the emphasis and wellness indexs in urban population in Japan. They make that topic who showed that a eminent sum emphasis mark was largest in the age group of 30 to 39 old ages for adult females ( Nakagawa y, 1998 ) .5.2 Occupational History of working(a) Womans In the present survey bulk ( 33 ) of adult females were making instruction, one ( 1 ) was making administrative work, two ( 2 ) were making lab work, five ( 5 ) were hearer, three ( 3 ) were clerical workers. A survey report that three groups of adult females like clerical worker, director, indi vidual parent ( chiefly divorced ) have been with empirical observation identified as being at comparatively high hazard for emphasis ( kushnirt,1993 ) .5.3 History of wellness Problem of Working Womans In the present survey one ( 3 ) adult females had hurting in lower appendages, two ( 2 ) adult females had stomachic ulcer, one ( 1 ) adult females had Diabetess and high blood pressure, one ( 1 ) adult females had thyroid related job, one ( 1 ) had high blood pressure. Majority ( 36 ) of adult females did non hold any wellness jobs. Informative Synthesis: Environmentalism

Creating a Sustainable Environment Every day our environment is ravaged by emissions, littered on by billions of mass, and c atomic number 18lessly treated with unlimited sources. Environmentalists like snoot Mckibben, scholar at Middle berry College and reservoir of the article The Ch on the wholeenge to Environmentalism, believe that the traffichip in the midst of people and the natural world has been largely taken for granted for most of human history (500).Although environmentalism to somewhat people mean driving less, establishing solar panels, recycling and to a greater extent Kate Zernike, reporter for the hot York Times and author of Green, Greener, Greenest, informs us about college campuss taking shortcuts in claiming theyre environmentally friendly. There are environmentalists and deans attempting to turn a difference in our environment, but Michael Pollan a professor of science and environmental journalism at the University of California asks the question, why bother with trying to cure climate change? Our Environment is an important sentiment of human lives, and should be taken care of like our own children. Our concepts of environmentalism, the way we conduct ourselves in terrestrial life, and our battle with climate change and environmentalism economically are all factors of a hazardous home we impart soon live in. Environmentalism is considered a hollow concept, argues Zernike, through the purchasing of offsets she believes its the environmental equivalent of paid someone to eat broccoli so you can keep eating ice cream (505).Offsets are credits sold by companies, specifically green companies to invest in planting trees or renewable energy. What Zernike means by this is its not ethically permissible to give someone silver to function the environment while you personally continue to pollute it, especially when that money given to the company doesnt always go towards funding the struggle for snow neutrality. Pollan agrees with Ze rnikes argument, the infinite cycle of repairing what were damaging, memory us at a standstill for carbon paper neutrality and climate change for years to come.Pollan knows that central around the world their lives my evil twin . . . whos itching to replace every last work over of CO2 Im trying not to emit (509). Although Pollan doesnt argue about offsets, he provides an example of double event environmentally that if walking to work increases your appetite and causes you to consume more marrow squash or milk as a result, walking might actually emit more carbon than driving Mckibben on the other hand looks at the more general picture of environmentalism, how humans retain had effected the environment we currently live within and around.Mckibben doesnt disagree with Zernike and Pollan on environmentalism, he believes the relations we have with nature have been taken for granted. Mckibben doesnt even call environmentalism in that name itself, or else personally renaming as the Global Warming Movement. Mckibben argues that people believe wildness is less important than community. Environmentalists like a shot prioritize building windmills over protecting our wildlife from their blades. These small choices we make pass on be the difference in how our world will be perceived in the future. After taking into consideration of the billions of people on our planet, we come to realize how large of an impact the way we live has on our world. Our daily life to a fault many environmentalists are considered a virus to earth as a whole. Mckibben argues that we had a great effect on particular places around us such as our fields and forests (500). Cutting down forests changes hydrological cycles, environmental patterns, and habitat patterns.Although disforestation is a priority to prevent, Zernike is focusing on changing the concepts of our lives to improve our environment. After claiming that going green is superb for a college campuss public image, Zernike tells us about the efforts students make in revolutionizing the way students learn, consume, and sleep. Although changes such as installing windmills, evolving trash bins to composts, and using biodegradable eating utensils are significant efforts to change the way we live, Michael Pollan argues that this all doesnt involvement.Pollan continues to assess his argument that attempting to cure climate change is irrational, he tells us that the big worry is nothing more or less than the sum total of countless everyday choices, most make by us, most made by desires, needs, and preferences (510). Everyone making these innumerable amount of choices against our environment suddenly expects laws and money to take action to fix it, Pollan argues that it is no less accurate to say that laws and money cannot do enough, it will also take profound changes in the way we live, changes that cannot be made by legislation or technology (510).Our economy cannot support replacing our carbon footprint. Poll an argues that we look to our leaders and money to save us from the situation weve gotten ourselves into. Cheap energy, which Pollan argues made specialization possible, gave us climate change, The mentality of specialization is causing people to believe and wait for a new technology to emerge and solve our problem of climate change. Kate Zernike explains to us college campuses have begun hiring specialized sustainability coordinators to increase their green rating and environmental efficiency.Although sustainability coordinators have a timetable for becoming carbon neutral . . . 12. 5 million was spent to make the buildings within the campus more efficient (506). Bill Mckibben believes that the economy cant do the job anymore, in part because the excessive consumption is precisely what drives the environmental crisis we find ourselves in (502). Mckibben also argues that the farmers market is the fastest growing part of the food economy in America, because it provides more economica lly sensible and healthy food.Whether environmentalists like Bill Mckibben think the concepts of the environmental movement should be changed to the global warming movement, revolutionizing our concepts of living and daily life by going green and making our buildings more efficient like Kate Zernike, and explaining to us how all these attempts to save the world from global warming doesnt matter like Michael Pollan. In order to combat our problem with climate change we need the cooperation of the billions of people that wait our world.Works Cited Mckibben, Bill. The Challenge to Environmentalism. An Empire for Slavery Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

An Empire for Slavery - Es declare ExampleSo it be complys clear that though bondage was very profitable to those who delivered slaves, such as cotton farmers, the overall effect was not only incredibly detrimental to the African-American population taken as slaves but also to the overall economy. As far as actual figures, it can be said that a single slave working in a cotton field would yield roughly $1,000 in crops per year. This is a hefty figure for that time period. Because slavery was so widespread and acceptable in Texas, many seeking riches and profit relocated to Texas where slavery was expanding and growing conditions were optimal. The soil and weather conditions in Texas made the growing of crops a very profitable business. Other states were slowly doing away with slavery as Texas continued to capitalize on slavery. These states were invaded by federal troops that sought to free slaves. By the year 1860, nearly a absorb of a million slaves were working on Texas plan tations. It was not until the year 1865 that the Texas slaves were freed.Due to the horrible conditions that most slaves had to endure, the command processing overhead time for bondsmen was low compared to the profit that it yielded. One would assume that the inhumane act of owning slaves would netly prove to be super profitable and in addition prop up an economy however, this proved to be untrue as the state of Texas ultimately suffered for its hunger for money and bondsmen as its overall effect was one of delayed industrial development. Certainly, when the federal troops were commissioned to free Texas slaves at last, Texan plantation owners were then forced to come by their profits honestly through paid prod instead of forced slavery. An alternative would be for the once slave holders to farm their land themselves which was unthinkable to most. The sudden need for laborers would give individuals who did not own a plantation an opportunity for employment since slavery was no l onger statutory. The presence of slave labor really took hundreds of thousands of possible jobs away from the working people that hired themselves out as laborers. This too, is part of why slavery was so harmful to the Texas economy overall. Another important aspect of Campbells look at slavery in Texas is how the legal system supported slavery. Obviously, there would have been no slavery in Texas if the legal system of the time did not work as somewhat of an accessory to taking and keeping slaves. in the beginning in the Texas revolution, Texan colonists fought fiercely for the right to hold slaves as Mexican law forbade it. It is common judgment that slavery prospered in Texas and also in the South as a result of the revolution and ultimate separation of Texas from Mexico. It was the slaveholders of the time that possessed the wealth in Texas and this ultimately meant that slaveholders were in fact the individuals with positions in unexclusive office. The slaveholders were the politicians so they were the ones ensuring laws in favor of slavery. Laws did exist that prohibited masters from mistreating their slaves however, it is important to understand that these laws were a canescent area in that there was no clear definition of the master-slave relationship. Also, if the individuals with the money ( the slaveholders) were the ones making the laws, it is safe to say that these masters were not looking out for the best interests of slaves.

OLPC Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

OLPC - Essay faceThe belief of OLPC came to his mind in a deprived village called Reaksmy in Cambodia (MARKOFF, 2005) which needed a 5-hour disgust from the nearest city. The the great unwashed there do not steady retain electricity, drinking water and the people are mostly very poor. Negroponte established a school there 8 years ago. He also placed a satellite dish to send and receive signals and generators as power supplies. indeed they gave a laptop reckoner to each child. Immediately, school got a lot more popular and modern as a school in a developed country. Kids who had never had the idea of what a reckoner looks analogous before were now a bust of the modern world. Nicholas Negroponte was really impressed since the children who did not even accommodate a TV before, had a high speed internet connection now. Negropontes idea was that children should not have any need for anyone to teach them how to use a computer. He had the idea of designing a laptop computer which they could experiment the way to use it on their own or with a little tending from a friend.Negroponte says the idea of One Laptop Per-Child is complete... team of engineers and programmers to design and implement a personal computer which could be usable for a child in a Third World conditions, an advanced computer with many innovations. For example, its the first laptop computer with can be used in open note and in full sunlight. Water may be dropped on the keyboard and it will not be damage at all. Sand and dust cannot enter the system and this level of protection, keeps it safe for a long time. tardily the OLPC project is facing with a new challenge which is competition and there is a question regarding this goal, If Negropontes idea is absolutely humanitarian and kids are proposed to be the only persons to benefit from it, why there are companies which demand to do the same work Perhaps the large number of needed laptops for children is the reason. With such a hulky numbe r of cheap laptops going to be distributed around the world, these companies will face with loss of revenue. Intel for example is a company which Negroponte believes is doing an effort to prevent him from achieving his goal for example by giving a laptop to both child in a school in Mexico (IWAP, 2007). But Intel describes this effort as a part of the goal of giving any child a laptop and giving them the access to the most low-cost computers. These laptops are now just models and they are not in the process of mass production. It is estimated that at least 3 million laptops is needed to be needed to be produced (OLPC, 2007). Negroponte is sure about getting these orders, even with the increasing amount of competition as other companies are trying to produce cheap laptops. so far considering these competitions, it is believed that the OLPC program will finally result in more kids getting laptops. This is at the end, what Negroponte wanted the

The use of steroids in major league baseball Essay

The habituate of steroids in major league baseball - Essay ExampleIn every granulose, millions of fans attend and cheer for their favourite team and favorite players in Major League Baseball. Fans argon awed and fascinated by the spotless talent of the players they so admire. Yet what most dont know and ref single-valued function to acknowledge is that some(prenominal) of these players use steroids, or performance enhancing substances. Because of this the integrity of the game that is held dear by many Americans becomes questionable. Can it quench be called sheer talent and skill in the sport when performance enhancing drugs are being apply? That is the question that every team owner, officer or administrator, coach, player, and fans must keep in mind. The widespread use of steroids in Major League Baseball indeed is a grave problem that inevitably to in earnest be addressed by baseball officials and the government. Apart from the negative and potentially fatal side effect t hat the use of steroids poses to the human body, it also encourages young players to use the substance in order to cleanse their game and qualify in the major leagues (Mitchell, 2007).In an article in USA Today, Rep. Tom Davis, chairman of the House direction on Government Reform, stated that college athletes believe they have to consider steroids if theyre going to make it to the pros high schooling athletes, in turn, think steroids are the key to getting a scholarship. Its time to break that vicious cycle, and it needs to happen from the top down. (as cited in Jenkins, 2005, para. 8). In addition to this, the use of the substance by players to raise and improve their statistics is unjust and unfair to the other players who are honest, hard-working, and just plain talented (Mitchell, 2007). It is unfair for the younger players who are clean to be competing against other athletes who are pumped up with steroids. Again, this makes the validity of baseball records and stats question able, as the use of steroids enables the player to attain a level of productivity that they would not have been able to achieve apply their own talent, efforts, and abilities (Grossman, Kimsey, Moreen, & Owings, n.d.). Indeed, the substance abuse of Steroids in Major league baseball is a form of artifice - the players who use this substance not only cheats their fans, other players, and the league, but they also cheat themselves in believe that it is good for them. The purity and integrity of the game itself is then lost. SteroidsAnabolic androgenic steroids are synthetic substances from testosterone, the unproblematic male hormone responsible for anabolism and catabolism of protein in muscles extending to increase in muscle bus and reduction of muscle soreness that is normally felt after strenous action (Mitchell, 2007). This permits the steroid users, then to exercise more. When steroids are regularly used for a longer period of time, eventually the body develops resistance t o the do of the drug, and larger doses are then needed to achieve the desired make of the drug. When this occurs, significant adverse effects whitethorn arise. As the primary physiologic effect of steroids is to raise testosterone levels, steroid toxicity may result to manic-depression and aggressive behaviors, may contribute to heart attack and stroke, hypogonadism, and infertility (Mitchell, 2007). Steroid abuse may as well result to a severe case of acne as the sebaceous glands are stimulated to hypersecrete cover on the face and body (Mitchell, 2007). In addition to this, it may cause enlargement of the prostate gland, gynecomastia or emlargement of the male breasts, and speeds up the physiologic process of balding in men (Mitchell, 2007). In adolescents, the use of steroids may inhibit the natural growth process as it causes premature fusion of growth plate in the long bones of the legs and arms (Mitchell, 2007). Steroid use has also been claimed to greatly contribute to ath letic injuries (Grossman et. al., n.d.)
